What Is This Tool?
The Moving Cost Estimator (US) gives a rough estimate of professional mover costs and a DIY truck rental from distance and shipment weight, with optional packing, storage and insurance.
What Can You Do With It?
Budget for a local or long-distance move. Compare hiring movers with renting a truck. Sanity-check mover quotes.
How Does It Work?
Base cost = weight ÷ 1,000 × (300 + miles × 2) for moves up to 100 miles, or (300 + miles × 0.7) for longer moves. Insurance = base × insurance %. Total = base + packing + storage + insurance. Low and high ranges are 80% and 125% of the total. DIY truck = 150 + miles × 1.1.
Key Benefits
Gives a low-to-high range instead of one number. Shows a DIY option for comparison. Instant results with no sign-up.
Limitations and Important Notes
Rates are Usekit’s rough estimates, not quotes from movers. Fuel, tolls, stairs, special items and season can change the price. Always get written quotes.
Privacy and Security
The numbers you enter in the Moving Cost Estimator (US) (distance, shipment weight, packing services and so on) are calculated in your browser. They are not sent to or saved on Usekit servers, and they disappear when you close the page.
Real-World Example
Inputs: Distance = 800; Shipment weight = 7,000; Packing services = 0; Storage = 0; Extra insurance = 0. Results: Professional movers (est.) = $6,020.00; Low range = $4,816.00; High range = $7,525.00; DIY truck rental (est.) = $1,030.00.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a typical home weigh for moving?
A rough rule is about 1,000 lbs per furnished room, but use a mover’s survey for accuracy.

It is a rough figure for rental and mileage. Fuel and equipment can add more.
